Printing for Beta Readers?

This spring I want to get my novel out to some beta readers. Some have Kindles, so that’s easy, but many will require physical copies. What is the best/cheapest option for printing out the beta version of a book for beta readers? I’ve looked at blurb.com, fedexkinkos, bestbookprinting.com & diggypod.com. Suggestions from wordpress?

Thanks. 🙂

  1. I confess I had to look up beta reader. I simply print (double-sided, single-spaced for economy) and I ask friends, other writers and reading group members and I like to give them an honorarium (~ ÂŁ50) for their troubles, but not all will accept it. I think you get more honest feedback that way.

  2. I use a program called Mobipocket Creator to turn documents into Kindle files. Maybe you can give them options like PDF, Word Doc, or Kindle. All else fails, use Kinkos.

Thanks. I use Scrivener which puts out Kindle files too. I’m hoping to get beta readers for starters, lol. Then hopefully most will have a Kindle.

      • Even if they have a computer or an Ipad they can download Kindle reading apps. The other eReaders will have a problem though.

  3. Wow, that’s an interesting question, Ty. My first instinct is to say give them a .doc file that they can print out if they want (or portions thereof).

Then again, they’re reading for free, so I guess the least you can do is provide the ms.

How long is the book? Kinkos is always where I did bulk copying in the past, but if your book is a tome, it could get pricey!

  4. You can setup a print book at Amazon’s CreateSpace without technically publishing the book. They ask you to buy a proof copy, but allow you to buy several. It costs about $6 plus shipping per copy, and the price depends on the length of the book.

Awesome! I didn’t know you could do that. Several copies will be perfect. I’ll look into createspace. Thanks!
