I’m doing this backwards. Probably. I’m nearing the end of my second draft and I’m just now going back over the novel to pick out the points. Fortunately there are five main plot points. Inciting Incident, Lock in, First Culmination, Main Culmination and Third Act twist. I know this is more of a screen writer’s structure, but it works for me. But, I’ve been too subtle in writing around these plot points. I need to go back and fix that.
But, I’d like to finish the second draft all the way through before going back for the third time. Sheesh. I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m learning.
My recent author improvement program has included books:
On Writing — Stephen King
Character and Viewpoint — Orson Scott Card
Plot & Structure — Jason Scott Bell
And I’m currently reading Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass.
These books help, but they also are such a harsh reality check. Like, I thought I was doing a lot better. I’m really doing a little better and have a long ways to go.
