“oh noes not another system for editing!”
Relax. You don’t have to do this. I’m just sharing about my experience.
I learned a bit about the EDITS system from Margie Lawson this past weekend.
What is it exactly? I don’t know, really. It was part of a short class, but it involves highlighter, and highlighters are cool.
So, I got my 6 pack of highlighters!
Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green & Blue
The idea is to highlight stuffs in a scene from your WIP or even in the book you picked up from Goodwill.
E – Emotional content, like purely visceral – Pink
D – Dialogue – If someone can actually hear it, highlight it – Blue
I – Internalizations – Those wonderful flashbacks, internal thought, thinking – Yellow
T – Tension/Conflict – yep, those – Orange
S – Setting & (Scene/Character) Descriptions – those too – Green
and, well, we ran out of letters, but use Red for Action, Dialogue Cues, Body Language, Senses, etc
The two scenes I did tonight look like art. Some kind of art. Maybe not good art.
Seriously, it was helpful. Probably because I re-read these scenes multiple times. Enough to find most of the dreadful stuff.
I think I need to take her on-line class on EDITS so I can know what I’m doing other than having fun with HIGHLIGHTERS! Which is fun. Real fun.
Until next time
