Hmm, maybe self-publishing is?

Maybe I need to focus on cultivating a good editor / writer relationship instead of finding an agent?

Discuss.

  1. I am in the same place. I have almost finished my second book, and I have a dozen shorts to support both books, and so far have a few rejections and no sign of traction.
I am going to look into self-publishing & partner publishing, and maybe if traditional press or agents are interested, I won’t say no.
The whole system needs an overhaul!

BTW – I think that most writers need editors. Those that don’t think that are wrong, its hard (impossible) to be objective about your own work. that’s why editors will always exist.

Thanks! Best wishes on your second book.

  2. Thanks for posting the article – it seems very sound advice. I have esablished a working relatonship with an editor and that has been fantastically helpful in making sure the quality of my manuscripts is up to par. I definitely think in this day and age indie is the way to go initially, then if something develps from that I thik the article is very wise counsel about gettng the right legal advice ec. But an editor, if you decide to engage one, is a great asset because in indi publishing all the advisors say the same thing – quality is king if you want your book noticed. Just my 2c worth, for what it’s worth. I’m no expert, of course! 🙂

  3. That is a good relationship to make even if you’re still going for an agent. The more polish your manuscript has, the better your chances.

Thanks. So much to learn. It seems like more work than the writing.

  4. I’d just worry about the writing first. Do you have a finished manuscript? That’s the first priority. The I’d attend conferences where you could pitch to editors or agents. Good luck!

Thanks, I agree. I have a completed, as it is, coherent first draft. I have the first four chapters out to an editor. There’s still months to go, but, at least it is months and not years. 🙂
