Plot and scene issues – Day #62 20130124

I made real progress toward a better location description. I’ve been uncomfortable with the description of a location. A good portion of the story occurs at this location. I was able to discover a much better location last night. I’ll do a bit of web searching today to find pics close to my mind’s idea. I’m using Pinterest now to collect pics representative of scenes.

I closed a plot hole on Wednesday night. Stepping back and trying to view the story from a reader’s perspective is helpful.

I didn’t make my word count yesterday, but that’s ok. I’ll catch up this weekend. My brain was tired last night. 264 words.

I never got into the word counting habit, but I have several friends who do it. They’ve all said that some times, it’s better to clarify an idea or fix a problem in the existing material than adding onto it. Congrats on fixing that plot hole.

Hmm. I hadn’t considered progressing without tracking word count. It is pretty artificial. I feel like the essence of the novel is finished though I am only near 70k words. I was thinking about completing character profile and scene description sheets starting next week, instead of pounding forward trying to write new content. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to synopsis writing class tomorrow.

The word count goals definitely help keep you productive if you’re easily distracted and have limited writing time. I actually use my weekends and nights to do character profiles and future story outlines. It really helps relieve the pressure of trying to come up with everything on the fly and letting you focus on the deeper details of the scenes during the first go. Though, that might just be me.
