Voilà: a quirk – Day #49 20130111

Donald Maass “What’s a foundational attribute of your protagonist? Create an odd tic or habit that implies the opposite. Add six times. Voilà: a quirk.” From Writing 21st Century Fiction

The white screen with keyboard fell asleep waiting for some tapping, any tapping. Alas, there was none.

Then, I reached for my Donald Maass book and pulled out the question from a chapter summary. Then I was created a meaningful habit/quirk for my protag. He seems to enjoy it. I’ll probably go back to this in February and see if I can come up with another habit and see which one works better. Got in 1318 words last night.

  1. by Donald Maas book, do you mean Writing the Breakthrough Novel? I bought it like 10 years ago during one of my early novel attempts. I’ll have to read it again.

He’s got a new one out. “Writing 21st Century Fiction” great format. Uses examples from modern novels.
