“Your protagonist matters to someone else. Whom? Why? Find a moment for your protagonist to weigh that responsibility and rise to it.” Donald Maass from his Jan 1 article on writerunboxed.com.
Using those questions as my writing prompt worked well last night. I completed a bit over 1,000 words which is great for me on a week night after working all day. I completed at least seven scene fragments and two full scenes. I will be using different questions from D. Maass as writing prompts for most of my remaining writing days. This is my strategy.
Last night, protag had a couple of character revealing scenes with the main supporting character. The scenes were dialog describing the “whom, and why” questions. I also wrote a number of scene fragments detailing dialogue between the mother of protag and protag. I intend to use a few of them to help the reader understand that relationship.
I’m also thinking about 6-9 months from now looking back at this writing diary. I think it will help me. I’ve had days where I wrote less than 300 words. But, I was able to move forward and continue toward the goal. This blog should encourage me in the future.
